Description
The piece opens with the words from Psalm 148 sung aleatorically (rhythmically free) on pitches which are also randomly played by handbells. Following this mood-setting intro, the piece suddenly breaks into a powerful 6/8 stride with keyboard and optional brass, percussion and harp accompaniment. The Psalm text remains strong in a vibrant melody through to the end, although an optional handbell moment recalls the opening at just the right moment.
