Mike Dorough

J. Michael Dorough received the Bachelor of Music degree in church music with organ principal and voice secondary from Stetson University and the Master of Music Education degree with choral emphasis from Georgia State University. Teaching middle school choral music in the metro Atlanta area for 32 years, his school choirs consistently received superior evaluations in performance and sight-reading, and were selected six times in blind auditions for GMEA state conference performances, plus state and regional ACDA performances. In his career Mike has received a variety of accolades, including being selected by his choral colleagues as Georgia Music Educator of the Year for 2008.  He also served through the years as choirmaster-organist in area Lutheran churches.  Mike retired from teaching in 2008 to expand his compositional efforts.

In the latter part of his choral music teaching career, Mike began a more concentrated focus on composing in an effort to provide higher quality pieces for his own choirs.  He also began to compose SATB divisi works with organ for the extraordinary high school choir of a close friend, resulting in premieres of several works in services at National Cathedral and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, as well as for his own choirs at the Cathedral of St. Philip.  His other sacred works include vocal solos, a setting of Episcopal Choral Evensong, and festival arrangements of more than thirty-five hymns.  Secular works include vocal solos and compositions for honor choirs and all-state chorus, including a commissioned work for an elementary district honor choir and a SSAA divisi composition premiered by the Spivey Hall Tour Choir.  Mike’s compositions frequently incorporate instrumental parts such as flute, violin, oboe or French horn.

Mike continues to serve as an active choral adjudicator, and enjoys substituting regularly as a choirmaster and organist.  He has one daughter and two grandchildren, and resides in McDonough, Georgia with his wife, Lorraine.

Selected for the Randy Stenson Male Choral Series, this is bound to be a new patriotic favorite. With a stirring text by Larry Brown, Mike Dorough has given us a stately tune with gusto. Avoiding the usual “cheesiness” often saddled onto patriotic songs, this one carries a proud and authentic air that will appeal to high school and college choirs.
